Lyptus, the sustainable eucalyptus hardwood from international forest products company Weyerhaeuser, has been developed and launched for decking applications as part of an innovative new exterior system by timber specialist Pircher. The Lyptus decking system is currently available in Italy and scheduled for a quarter-four release in the UK and the rest of Europe.

The new system combines Lyptus lumber with Vacsol Aqua, a water-based wood preservative, to deliver a highly aesthetic and PEFC-certified decking solution. Independently the system components offer strong environmental and performance credentials, while combined, they create highly sustainable, durable and superior quality decking that is guaranteed by Pircher for ten years.

Andrea Lacedelli, sales director of Pircher, said: “Pircher traditionally engages in study activities aimed at sourcing certified and eco-sustainable woods as an alternative to exotic and non-renewable wood types. We also research durable and ultra-low environmental impact treatments to protect the product in all stages of its lifecycle.

“By bringing the two together, we have expanded our range of decking products to include Lyptus, which is simply a beautiful timber that will enhance any exterior environment.”

Traditionally used for interior applications, such as architectural millwork and internal panelling, the development of Lyptus for exterior use is expected to further increase the popularity of this sustainable tropical hardwood.

John Guerin, European commercial director for Weyerhaeuser, said: “Lyptus is a hardwearing timber that is proven to maintain its appearance over time. The development of a system that makes it suitable for decking is a welcome innovation as it will enable our distributor partners to enhance their portfolios and capitalise on the continued demand for high-quality and sustainable exterior timber products.”

Lyptus timber is remarkably clear and exhibits fewer knots than many other species. As the trees are plantation grown and harvested within 14-16 years, compared with the 60 years it takes some tropical species to mature, Lyptus provides a truly sustainable choice where a tropical hardwood is preferred.

Lyptus trees are grown on responsibly managed plantations in Brazil. These are certified to the national sustainable forestry standard, Cerflor, recognised by the international Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Weyerhaeuser Products Limited, headquartered in Brussels, distributes Lyptus through an established group of specialist partners across Europe, including international timber products supplier Woodlink UK.
