Whitgift centre

Australia-based Westfield and the UK-based property developer Hammerson have secured approval from the London Borough of Croydon for their £1bn redevelopment plan of the Whitgift Centre in Croydon, London, UK.

Both the firms are working together as the Croydon Partnership to deliver the scheme, for which the council has given planning permission.

The application will now be considered by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

Detailed designs for the scheme are expected to be revealed during 2014 and construction work is planned for 2015.

The scheme will transform Croydon’s town centre into 1.5 million square feet of retail, leisure and restaurant facilities, new car parking and around 600 new residential units.

The development is part of the partnership’s 2 million ft² vision to regenerate the town centre, including the adjacent Centrale shopping centre, which has been approved as the subject of a refurbishment programme.

Under the project, existing public areas near the development such as North End, Poplar Walk, Wellesley Road and George Street will be refurbished.

The developers have agreed to pay more than £30m towards local transport improvements.

Westfield development director John Burton said this is a significant step forward for the redevelopment plans of Croydon’s retail town centre and will create 5,000 new local jobs.

“We believe that our proposed £1bn investment into the transformation of Croydon’s shopping and leisure offer has the potential to act as a major catalyst for the wider physical and social regeneration of the town,” Burton said.
