The City of Espoo in Finland has chosen construction company YIT as its partner for the renovation and expansion of the Tapiola Swimming Hall, with the agreement expected to be signed following the city’s procurement decision in the coming months.

The project's value for YIT is estimated at nearly €35m ($38.3m).

Espoo and YIT will collaborate closely on the swimming hall renovation, preserving its original architectural design while integrating modern technology.

Construction-related preparatory works will commence next month, with the swimming hall set for completion by early 2028.

All areas of the Tapiola Swimming Hall, including its outdoor spaces, will undergo repairs and partial reconstruction as part of the project.

Design and construction will adhere to the hall's cityscape and architectural values, complying with the Finnish Heritage Agency and the ELY Centre's conservation regulations.

The 1965-built structure will be restored to its original appearance, with new technical facilities and changing rooms added.

The main pool hall's roof dome window will remain intact while the outdoor area and the extension building constructed in 2005 will undergo repairs.

This project will also focus on minimising environmental impact by recycling materials and choosing solutions based on their service life.

The Tapiola Swimming Hall, designed by architect Aarne Ervi, is seen as a culturally significant part of the Tapiola Central Area. The pool has been closed to the public since 2016.

YIT Infra segment head Aleksi Laine said: "We are pleased that YIT has been selected as the main contractor for the project of the Tapiola Swimming Hall, which is of regional and cultural historical value. We look forward to the opportunity to make the swimming hall available to Espoo residents again in cooperation with the city.

"The starting point of the renovation and expansion project is to respect the original look of the swimming hall and bring in technology that meets current requirements. Due to the central location of the project, our goal is to work closely with the residents and communities in the area during the construction work."

Earlier this month, YIT collaborated with JSC Limada for the €47m renovation of the Mada shopping centre in Vilnius, Lithuania, following a tender-based contract.
