Substantial work finalised on New York motorway infrastructure project

Upgrades of the 1-90 road comprised wider shoulders, updated signage, and drainage system upgrades.

Construction work on an $84.2m infrastructure improvement project on a section of the Thruway (I-90) in Onondaga County, New York, US, has been substantially completed.

Commencing in 2022, the project covered pavement reconstruction on a five-mile section of the I-90 road, as well as ramp reconstruction, rehabilitation of two bridges, and the replacement of one bridge.

Ancillary work is set to be finished in early 2024.

New York-based construction company Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors was appointed as the contractor for this project.

New York City governor Kathy Hochul said: “The Thruway is a vital corridor for travel and commerce in Central New York, and these investments are critical to securing a safer roadway for all New Yorkers.

“New York State will continue to revitalise its infrastructure to provide motorists and commercial vehicles alike with a reliable roadway for generations to come.”

The Thruway was rebuilt for five miles in both directions, from the west of exit 37 to exit 39.

Exit 39's ramp was rebuilt while pavement repairs were completed on exit 38.

The restoration of the Onondaga Parkway bridge over I-90, the Onondaga Lake Outlet bridge over I-90, and the reconstruction of the CSX Railroad bridge also over I-90 were all part of the project.

The upgrade works undertaken consisted of wider shoulders, new guide rails, updated signage, reflective line striping for better safety, drainage upgrades, and the installation of a natural living snow fence to prevent snow from drifting onto the motorway.

Thruway Authority acting executive director Frank G Hoare said: “This was a significant project which will provide the 35,000 vehicles who drive this stretch every day an improved travel experience.

“Projects such as this one address ageing infrastructure and keep the Thruway one of the safest superhighways in the nation.”

Earlier in October this year, reconstruction work began on the Park Avenue Viaduct replacement project in East Harlem, New York City.
