Work has commenced on a $47m construction project to renew a segment of State Route 17 in Tioga County in the US state of New York.

The construction project, a two-year initiative, will see the resurfacing of approximately 22 miles of pavement and the rehabilitation of two bridges.

This development is part of a broader effort to modernise the state's infrastructure, with a focus on promoting equity, connectivity, and transportation opportunities across New York.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: “New York is making critical investments to ensure our vital travel arteries keep people moving for decades to come.

“State Route 17 is one of the most heavily travelled roads in the Southern Tier, and this highway improvement project will increase its durability and help keep traffic flowing regardless of the challenges posed by Mother Nature.”

The roadway will be resurfaced using warm mix asphalt, a cost-effective and durable alternative to traditional methods.

The upgrades will extend from Exit 65 in Owego to the Broome County line, including the enhancement of guide rails for improved safety measures.

Slate Hill Constructors has been appointed as the project contractor following a competitive bidding process.

The current bridge structure will be replaced with a new bridge featuring increased vertical clearance from 14ft 5in to 16ft 11in.

During the construction period, the Schepps Corners Road bridge will be closed to all traffic, with a 5.5-mile detour directing motorists via Kirkville Road to N Manlius Road.

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2024.

This bridge replacement is part of a broader investment, with $2.4bn earmarked over the next five years for the Thruway’s Capital Program.
