WM has initiated construction on a new recycling facility in Fort Worth, Texas, which is expected to bolster recycling efforts in the city and the broader North Texas region, US.

In 2023, the City of Fort Worth endorsed WM's proposal for recycling processing services. Following the agreement with the city, construction of the new facility at 9600 Hemphill St commenced.

The WM Fort Worth Recycling Facility, covering approximately 110,000ft², is designed to process up to 144,000 tonnes (t) per year of recyclable materials.

The facility's technology aims to expand the range of plastics collected for recycling and improve the quality of materials for end users.

This will be achieved through the integration of sorting technologies, where conveyors and optical sorters will communicate with each other and technicians.

Additionally, the inclusion of an extra optical sorting line will enhance the capture of recyclable materials.

WM is currently processing recyclables for the city at the WM Arlington Recycling Facility.

WM TexOma area vice-president Domenica Farmer said: “WM is committed to environmental stewardship, supporting local communities and increasing access to recycling in North Texas and beyond.

“Construction of the new WM Fort Worth Recycling Facility is an important part of our investment in innovative recycling solutions that will help fuel a circular economy.”

The plant is expected to become operational by the end of 2025.

This development is a part of WM's companywide investment exceeding $1bn in new and updated recycling facilities across North America from 2022 to 2026.
