Wills Bros Civil Engineering is set to commence works on the Riverside Way project in Inverness, Scotland, on 30 October.

The company secured this contract following a competitive tender process that was held between July and September earlier this year.

The project intends to enhance transport provisions for people walking, wheeling, and cycling along Ness Walk and Bught Road.

The design of this development was financed by the Places for Everyone programme, which is managed by Sustrans, a registered charity operating in the UK.

The Highland Council teamed up with consultants AECOM to develop technical plans for the proposed works that will further boost the Inverness City Active Travel Network.

This network is delivered by the council with support from Transport Scotland via Sustrans’ Places for Everyone initiative.

Highland Council city leader Ian Brown said: “I am looking forward to work starting next week as it represents a significant improvement to the active travel environment along one of our city’s popular and most iconic routes, which is frequented by thousands of local people and visitors alike throughout the year.”

Transport Scotland will provide support for the development of a one-way traffic road with cycling contraflow and the expansion of footways along Riverside Way.

Works will also include expanded footpaths, a separate cycling contraflow lane, formalised parking provisions, and modifications to junction layouts throughout the project area.

Other improvements, including lighting upgrades, will be executed between the Highland Hospice and Whin Park.

Sustrans Scotland director Karen McGregor said: “The improvements set to get underway next week will build upon the success of the Inverness City Active Travel Network and further help make walking, wheeling, and cycling journeys accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”
