Webuild has secured a contract to build three dams and undertake other related works at the Trojena mountain destination in Saudi Arabia.

Commissioned by NEOM, the contract is worth $4.7bn.

The project will involve the construction of three dams to form a 2.8km-long freshwater lake, alongside building a bow-shaped architectural structure.

The main dam, to be constructed from roller-compacted concrete (RCC), will stand at 145m high and 475m long, with a volume of approximately 2.7 million cubic metres.

The second dam will also be built using RCC while the third will be constructed from rock, holding a volume of 4.3 million cubic metres.

Spanning roughly 1.5km², the artificial lake is said to become the largest architecturally crafted body of water in the country.

It will form a central part of Trojena’s LAVA-designed master plan, aiming to sustain and regenerate the local natural environment and offer clean, serene outdoor mountain living.

The lake will also serve as a hub for water sports and entertainment.

Webuild CEO Pietro Salini said: “We are delighted and truly proud to be awarded this important project in NEOM. The 2.8km-long, manmade, freshwater lake will be a key asset in the Trojena master plan.”

Trojena region head and executive director Philip Gullett added: “The appointment of Webuild is a significant milestone in our construction progress. We have already completed around three million cubic metres of excavation at the lake site, and we continue to excavate 90,000m³ of rock per week.

“Importantly [we] are implementing a sustainable approach by using all the rock excavated and reusing it for the lakebed lining and dam construction.”

In Saudi Arabia, Webuild’s ongoing projects include Riyadh Underground Line 3, Diriyah Square, and Zuluf, among others.

Analyzing the growth prospects of the global construction industry

GlobalData's latest report offers an insight into the outlook for the global construction industry to 2027. Despite the challenging macroeconomic and geopolitical backdrop, the global construction industry managed to continue to generate growth momentum in 2023, with global output rising by 3.4% in real terms. Much of this is owing to China’s surprisingly strong performance despite the prolonged real estate crisis there.
