Warwick Carbon Solutions subsidiary Broadwing Energy has signed a formal agreement to build a power and steam facility in Decatur, Illinois, US.
The signing follows US-based food processing company ADM and Warwick Carbon Solutions' initial announcement of plans to construct a new power and steam facility in 2021.
Warwick will construct and operate a natural gas power plant to supply electricity and steam to ADM’s Decatur processing operations.
It will implement removal technology to capture CO₂ emissions, which will be safely and permanently stored underground using ADM’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) capabilities.
The facility is expected to capture more than 90% of its CO₂.
The new plant will have the potential to permanently capture and store two million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
Warwick Carbon Solutions CEO Jonathan Wiens said: “Broadwing will showcase the industry-leading capabilities of ADM’s sequestration operations, Mitsubishi Power’s state-of-the-art power generation equipment, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America’s carbon dioxide removal technology for a proven and trusted decarbonisation solution.”
Broadwing Energy is expected to create a thousand direct and indirect jobs during construction, and two dozen jobs during operation.
ADM Strategy and Innovation senior vice-president Ian Pinner said: “Our world-class carbon capture and storage facility is powering our ability to offer low-carbon intensity ingredients and applications to meet customer demand, acting as an accelerator for growth platforms like BioSolutions and a foundational enabler for our potential entry into sustainable aviation fuel.”
