Morgan Sindall Construction's Northern Home Counties division (Morgan) has been selected to deliver a £19.1m ($23.81m) ward expansion project in England, UK.
Commissioned by Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust, the development is called Oak Wards.
The project, procured through the Pagabo Framework, is set to commence in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024 and be completed by the end of 2025.
MKUH CEO Joe Harrison said: “This new facility will play a pivotal role in developing our hospital estate to meet the acute-care needs of the growing city of Milton Keynes.”
This marks the second collaboration between Morgan and the MKUH NHS Foundation Trust, with the construction company having been involved since the RIBA stage two of the project.
The development will comprise a new two-storey building and a connecting corridor to the existing accident and emergency department.
Morgan Construction Northern Home Counties Area director Emma Curtis said: “With Milton Keynes’ population increasing by more than 15% between 2011 and 2021, it’s important that we invest and upscale the city’s healthcare infrastructure to ensure that it is able to meet current and future challenges.”
The new facility will enhance MKUH's ward capacity by adding two 24-bed wards, including five-bed bays and single bedrooms.
It will also have ancillary space for offices, storage, a ward kitchen, and staff areas.
Each floor will feature a rectangular layout, including a central nurse's station and large bay windows, reflecting the layout of an existing ward at the hospital.
Morgan has applied its Intelligent Solutions approach to address potential challenges and ensure the building meets the NHS' net-zero carbon objectives.
Given the project's proximity to critical hospital operations, Morgan will schedule construction activities to minimise disruption, particularly near the site's emergency department.
Additionally, coordination with flight authorities will ensure that the hospital's helipad remains operational during the construction phase.
Morgan is also engaged with MKUH NHS Foundation Trust on a new radiotherapy centre, which is anticipated to open later this year.
