The facility will offer a six-bed service with a therapeutic, homely environment.

The Western Australian (WA) Government has announced plans for a contemporary residential-style mental health facility in the town of Broome.

The facility's 'Step Up/Step Down' service is intended to offer a transitional space for individuals experiencing changes in their mental health, bridging the gap between hospital and home care.

To be located at the Yinajalan Ngarrungunil Health and Wellbeing Campus, the facility will offer a six-bed service with a therapeutic, homely environment.

Residents can receive services, including counselling and therapy, for a duration of up to 28 days, supporting those needing support without full hospitalisation.

The service is designed to be close to family and friends. It will also assist individuals in re-establishing themselves within their community through the development of healthy routines and coping strategies.

EMCO Building has been awarded an early contractor involvement contract for the project. This approach allows the contractor to contribute to the design process, ensuring cultural considerations are met and local subcontractors are engaged.

WA Minister for Health and Mental Health Amber-Jade Sanderson said: "The Step Up/Step Down service in Broome will provide more flexible, community-based mental health services for people living in the Kimberley region.

"The facility will offer short-term rehabilitation for people suffering with mental health concerns who do not require acute care but might not be able to manage at home."

Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna added: "There has been extensive consultation between the [WA] Department of Health, the Mental Health Commission and Nyamba Buru Yawuru to ensure the site meets the cultural and local needs of the community."

Yesterday (28 January), the A$165m ($102.79m) East Perth Primary School development in WA reached a significant phase, with architects appointed for detailed planning, and forward works confirmed to begin shortly.
