The Western Australia (WA) Government of Australia has issued a request for tender to identify a qualified builder for the new 'Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation' in Cannington.
This facility, designed to offer an affordable housing option for indigenous people, will be the state's fifth such project.
The project is expected to house up to 100 guests in various unit types, including accessible, family, and single units.
Contractors who have been shortlisted by the WA Department of Communities' Housing Construction and Refurbishment Builders Panel will have the opportunity to bid for the project.
The development is part of a broader initiative to provide safe and appropriate accommodation for indigenous people, with three other facilities already operational in Kalgoorlie, Derby, and Broome, and another under construction in Geraldton by GBSC Yurra.
Additionally, the WA Government, in collaboration with the Australian national government, will contribute to the state's affordable housing sector by constructing 12 new social homes in Albany.
This initiative, part of the Social Housing Accelerator Program, is supported by a A$4.2m ($2.62m) grant awarded to My Home Australasia, which is engaged in charity programmes related to housing development.
WA's portion of the funding, amounting to A$209.2m, will facilitate the construction of more than 260 social homes and enable refurbishments of over 300 existing social homes throughout the state.
Advance Housing will oversee property and tenancy management services for the Albany homes, having secured a 40-year ground lease of the site. Meanwhile, Smith Constructions has been selected as the builder for the Albany project, with construction set to begin in early 2025.
