The projects are set to generate approximately 180GWh of annual energy upon completion.

Upasana Mukherjee January 23 2024

Vortex Energy has begun construction on 53MW of onshore wind and 57MW of photovoltaic (PV) solar projects in Poland.

This portfolio of renewable energy carries a total equity commitment of approximately $123m.

The move aligns with Vitol's strategy to invest $1bn in the Polish renewable energy sector over the next five years, a plan unveiled following its acquisition of Vortex in January 2023.

The aforementioned projects are expected to be completed between 2024 and 2025.

Upon completion, the PV and wind projects will together generate roughly 180GWh of energy a year.

This is anticipated to meet the needs of about 93,000 households and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 126,000 tons per year.

Vitol Renewables EMEA head Justine Ryan said: “Renewable power is central to Europe’s decarbonisation strategy. Vortex has the potential to make a significant contribution to reducing emissions and providing energy security through sustainable and affordable electricity in Poland and wider Europe.

“It is a strong and exciting business for Vitol and we will look to grow it further in Poland and expand it with sustainable generation opportunities across the region.”

Vortex, with its contract partners Nomad Electric and Nordex, will manage the construction process.

Poland-based Vortex has delivered more than 450MW of operational capacity across wind and solar.

Additionally, the company has a development pipeline exceeding 3GW of wind and solar projects and 2GW of battery energy storage systems.
