Veidekke has secured a design and build contract to build a parking garage and student apartments in Gjøvik, a municipality in Norway’s Toten district.
The contract has been awarded by Gjøvik Municipality and student welfare organisation named Sit, in Norway.
It is valued at approximately Nkr320m ($31.75m), excluding value added tax.
Veidekke informed that this contract order was booked for the fourth quarter.
As part of the contract, Veidekke will be responsible for constructing a two-level parking garage along with two 7,000m² eight-storey buildings with 245 student apartments.
Covering around 5,500m², the parking garage will be partly underground and will accommodate around 180 cars.
Design work related to the parking garage and student housing blocks is expected to commence in January 2024.
Associated construction work is planned to commence in May next year.
The company is planning to complete the entire project by the autumn semester of 2026.
According to Veidekke, it will leverage various sustainable practices for the construction of this project.
The company will use wood in outer walls and solid wood for the load-bearing structures, which will help in significantly minimising carbon dioxide emissions from the buildings.
The design also includes the development of outdoor areas conducive to social activities for students.
Veidekke Bygg Indre Østland district manager Geirmund Østvold said: “We are of course both happy and proud that we have won the competition for this assignment, which has been worked on for a long time now. Good student housing and infrastructure are important to many in Gjøvik, and we are already building 98 student apartments for Sit at Kallerud.
“We are grateful for the renewed confidence and look forward to continuing our good cooperation, now also with the municipality.”
Recently, Veidekke and Oslobygg signed a design and build contract for constructing the Økern school in eastern Oslo, Norway.
