Community builder Stockholm Vatten och Avfall has appointed Norwegian construction and civil engineering company Veidekke for the development of a new wastewater tunnel in Stockholm, Sweden.

The worth of this contract is Skr898m ($85.25m).

The new 'Mässtunneln' wastewater tunnel will stretch from Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö via Solberga, Västberga, and Midsommarkransen to Liljeholmen.

According to Veidekke, the tunnel will help ease the burden on Stockholm’s wastewater system and minimise the risk of flooding.

Mässtunneln is an additional phase in the long-term management of Stockholm’s wastewater. The proposed tunnel is expected to allow further residential development in the Stockholmsmässan neighbourhood.

The scope of Veidekke’s works includes the development of the 4km-long tunnel alongside an adjoining access tunnel.

The access tunnel will be constructed in northern Solberga near Kontrollvägen, from which the wastewater tunnel will be demolished and drilled in both directions.

Construction work is set to begin next month and is predicted to become operational in 2030.

Veidekke Anläggning Öst work manager Tomas Karlsson said: “We very much appreciate having Stockholm Vatten och Avfall’s continued confidence and look forward to cooperating on yet another project to improve Stockholm’s environment.”

The company has registered this contract in its order bookings for the fourth quarter (Q4) of this year.

The company also recorded profit before tax of Nkr601m in Q3 2023, a rise from Nkr545m in Q3 2022.
