Veidekke has entered an agreement with GC Rieber Eiendom to construct an environmentally certified commercial building in Bergen, Norway.

The collaborative design-and-build contract, excluding VAT, is valued at Nkr241m ($22.50m).

The project, named Fenderen, will be located on the waterfront at the centre of Solheimsviken, a business and technology hub.

Norconsult will serve as the primary tenant for this building.

Solheimsviken is part of the wider Solheimsviken and Marineholmen Innovation District, which houses numerous finance and technology companies.

GC Rieber Eiendom managing director Tor Instanes said: “Fenderen is the third solid wood building for GC Rieber Eiendom and is being built in the innovation district in Solheimsviken.

“We see it as an important part of our social mission to bring together actors from academia, service providers, business clusters, public administration and startups, and create good working conditions and meeting places for the employees.”

The latest building will feature a solid wood structure with three floors and a basement, covering approximately 7,800m².

It will utilise a mix of solar cells, electricity, district heating, and seawater for energy.

The design and materials have been chosen to ensure sustainability throughout the building's life cycle.

In addition, the building aims to achieve the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) Outstanding (Paris Proof) classification.

Veidekke Bergen district manager Thor Småbrekke said: “We are very pleased to extend our good cooperation with GC Rieber Eiendom from the construction of hotel Viken Brygge (Moxy Bergen), which will be the nearest neighbour.

“The project has very high environmental ambitions, which of course is what we prefer to build. We really appreciate the commission.”

Construction and groundwork for Fenderen are set to begin in May or June of this year, with completion expected in March 2026.

Last week, Veidekke subsidiary Arcona secured an execution contract to undertake a renovation project at the Södersjukhuset hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.

Awarded by Region Stockholm’s property company Locum, the contract is valued at approximately Skr300m.
