Norwegian construction company Veidekke has been commissioned to construct an environmentally certified activity centre in Sandefjord, a municipality in Vestfold, Norway.

The design-and-build contract, which has been awarded by the municipality of Sandefjord, has an estimated value of Nkr150m ($14.55m), excluding VAT.

Veidekke said that this contract was booked in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The new activity centre is being developed to provide workplaces for residents with permanent adaptation requirements.

It will be situated at Helgerød and span approximately 4,300m² of gross area across two floors.

The scope of the project includes rerouting stormwater pipes, stream opening, landscaping, and the development of a new pedestrian and cycle path.

Construction of the centre is predicted to commence in early February this year and is set for completion in late 2025.

According to Veidekke, Sandefjord has opted for emission-free construction sites, mandating the exclusive use of electricity or hydrogen as energy sources.

Carbon emissions from building materials will also be approximately 30% lower than a reference building and will meet energy class A standards.

Veidekke Bygg Vestfold og Telemark district manager Lars N Hjertås said: “The activity centre meets an important need for society, and we consider it very meaningful to build such an important building.

“We are therefore particularly pleased that we won the fierce competition for the commission where the award criteria were 40% price and 60% quality.”

Recently, Veidekke received a contract to build a parking garage and student apartments in Gjøvik, a municipality in Toten, Norway.
