Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in the UAE has awarded contracts to deliver upgrades to a total of 22 bus stations and depots.

Under a three-year plan, improvements will be made to 16 bus stations and six depots, aiming to enhance the quality of public transport services.

The projects' scope includes infrastructural works on buildings, passenger facilities and waiting terminals, driver service offices, engine maintenance workshops, and more.

RTA board of executive directors chair and director general Mattar Al Tayer said: “Building public bus stations and depots forms a key part of RTA's strategy to enhance the public transport infrastructure. It aims to encourage the community to opt for public transport in their daily movements.

“The project goes beyond the traditional function of stations, aiming to not just facilitate passenger mobility but to enhance the overall travel experience. This encompasses offering comprehensive services that contribute to passenger happiness, improving accessibility for people of determination, providing bicycle racks, and ensuring seamless connectivity with Dubai Metro and taxi services.”

Enhancements will be made to nine bus stations in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai.

Six bus depots at Al Aweer, Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Quoz, Al Ruwyyah, and Jebel Ali will also be developed.

Upgrades will include revamping inspection lanes, engine wash lanes, drainage system improvements, and floor maintenance, among others.

Public facilities will also be rehabilitated, and drivers' residential quarters will be provided at the Jebel Ali and Al Quoz depots.

Exterior works across all stations will involve installing traffic signals and sidewalks, revamping external lights, infrastructure work for security systems, and more.

In addition, the bus parking yards at five stations will be redesigned, along with initial test zones added at Al Khawaneej, Al Ruwyyah, and Al Aweer depots.

The latest announcement comes after the RTA announced 75% completion of its Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed roads intersection improvement project last month.

In 2021, the RTA completed the construction of several public bus stations across Dubai.
