Uniper to build two photovoltaic plants in Lower Saxony, Germany

Uniper will collaborate closely with the authorities, stakeholders, and technical experts during the process.

Düsseldorf-based international energy company Uniper has announced plans to construct two solar parks in Lower Saxony, Germany.

These projects will be located near the power stations of Huntorf and Wilhelmshaven.

One of these two projects will be developed on an area of around 281ha in Elsfleth, Wesermarsch, Oldenburg.

This plant will have a capacity of around 300MW.

Last month, the municipality of Elsfleth granted development permission for this project, which formally marks the beginning of the urban land use plan process.

The project’s legal framework will be developed by creating a development plan (Bebauungsplan) and modifying the land use plan (Flächennutzungsplan).

Uniper will collaborate closely with the authorities, stakeholders, and technical experts during the process.

Located in Wilhelmshaven, the second project will be on 14ha with a capacity of 17-megawatt peaks (MWp).

This photovoltaic plant, which received a statutory resolution last month, will be built on the site of the former Wilhelmshaven coal-fired power station’s ash landfill.

More than 30,000 modules will be set up in the plant, which is expected to generate around 16,000MW annually.

Uniper Renewables CEO Jörg Lennertz said: “Projects like the ones in Elsfleth and Wilhelmshaven are of great importance to us, also because of their proximity to our energy transformation hubs. It is important for us to emphasise that the milestone now reached is not only a result of the efforts of our Uniper teams but also of the strong support of the community and regional authorities, who fully stand behind our decarbonisation targets.

“Uniper’s new strategy aims for a greener future and renewables play a very important role in this – not only in the implementation of the strategy but also in achieving our ambitious decarbonisation targets.”
