Tricon and Suvic to build waste heat power plant in Kirkkonummi

The facility will harness excess heat generated from the local data centre.

Finland-based construction companies Tricon and Suvic have teamed up to construct a waste heat power plant in the data centre area in Kirkkonummi, Finland.

The scope of this project includes the construction of buildings needed for waste heat capture.

The power plant will supply electricity to Fortum’s Kirkkonummi district heating system.

It will harness excess heat generated by the Kirkkonummi data centre and from the surrounding air.

The site will include a heat-capturing facility comprising heat exchangers, air-to-water heat pumps, electric boilers, a heat-sink battery with a 20,000m³ capacity, and a supplementary pumping facility.

Suvic CEO Ville Vesanen said: “The scale of magnitude of this waste-heat-to-energy conversion is unique not only in Finland but also around the world.

"The project supplements perfectly Suvic’s carbon-neutral energy construction and design offering for its clients, which previously already included both EPC [engineering, procurement, and construction] construction of infrastructure for windfarms and EPC construction of industrial scale solar parks.”

Construction works are set to begin later this year and will last until 2025.

Suvic Working Association project manager Jukka Kallio said: “The physical work will commence in Kirkkonummi in September 2023, and we will be ready for equipment installations in December 2024.”
