General contractor Thompson Builders has completed phase two of the Cesar Chavez Ravenswood Middle School project in East Palo Alto, US.

This final phase, worth $15.9m, is a part of the larger $47.2m Cesar Chavez Ravenswood Middle School project.

The extensive modernisation of Ravenswood Middle School, which began conceptualisation in 2015, has now concluded after 30 months of construction.

The project included more than 24,000ft² of new construction and 25,000ft² of modernisation.

It has added 35 new classroom spaces, multiple staff and student bathrooms, breakout spaces, workrooms, and student/parent support offices.

Two new buildings have been constructed as part of the project, including a two-storey building, which now features classrooms and staff spaces, along with a media centre.

Meanwhile, a new single-storey building serves as the secure single point of entry to the campus, containing the site's administrative offices.

Three existing classroom wings were modernised as part of the works, involving seismic upgrades, new roofing, windows, and updated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

The project was originally budgeted at $50m but was completed with a $2.8m saving.

These savings enabled the district to implement further enhancements, including synthetic turf for courtyards, a new car park, and improved security measures.

This development comes after Thompson Builders announced the ground-breaking for the Merritt College Horticulture Complex project in Oakland, US, in September last year.

Analyzing the growth prospects of the global construction industry

GlobalData's latest report offers an insight into the outlook for the global construction industry to 2027. Despite the challenging macroeconomic and geopolitical backdrop, the global construction industry managed to continue to generate growth momentum in 2023, with global output rising by 3.4% in real terms. Much of this is owing to China’s surprisingly strong performance despite the prolonged real estate crisis there.
