Sweco, an engineering and architecture company, has been awarded contracts to provide services for the construction and expansion of two hospital projects in Germany.
These projects include the development of a new medical care centre at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) and the expansion and refurbishment of the Martha-Maria Hospital in Nuremberg.
These contracts affirm Sweco's expertise in healthcare facility design and optimisation.
The first project at UMG involves the construction of a parent-child centre as part of the hospital's redevelopment strategy.
Founded in 1732, UMG is one of Germany's largest university hospitals, with over 1,600 beds and 40 specialist clinical departments.
Sweco's role in the project extends from the first construction stage, which includes the new Emergency Department and Critical Care and Surgery centre, to the second phase.
The company's services will encompass structural and civil engineering planning, building information modelling, as well as medical equipment and IT planning.
Sweco will begin its services in late 2024, with construction starting in 2027 and completion anticipated by 2030.
The second project involves the Martha-Maria Hospital in Nuremberg, which, along with St. Theresienkrankenhaus, merged with Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2024 to enhance healthcare services.
This merger necessitates a significant redevelopment and expansion of the Martha-Maria site, including the consolidation of all inpatient units into a modern 470-bed facility.
Sweco's plan for the new building structure follows a deficiency analysis and feasibility study, with full-scale project planning now in progress.
The company's involvement commenced in 2024 and is expected to continue until 2038.
Sweco Germany Business Area president Julia Zantke said: “We look forward to supporting our clients in creating state-of-the-art medical facilities with modern and innovative architectural solutions.
"Sweco’s team brings extensive experience in planning, designing and managing healthcare construction projects to meet the highest standards.”
Sweco's portfolio of healthcare projects was further bolstered earlier in November with the design and planning of a new regional hospital in Kiruna, Sweden. This project will see the construction of a hospital on a former mining site, emphasising innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.
