Construction is underway on Sunrise Village, a new affordable housing project in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood of east Vancouver, Canada.
This initiative, located at 2924 Venables Street, aims to create 146 affordable homes for older residents, families, and people with disabilities.
The project is a collaborative effort involving the federal government, the provincial government of British Columbia (BC), the City of Vancouver, Metro Vancouver, and Brightside Community Housing.
Replacing an older building that contained 64 apartments, the two new structures at Sunrise Village will offer a range of affordable rental options.
Brightside Community Homes Foundation CEO William Azaroff stated that the community is being designed to be multigenerational.
Sunrise Village is being constructed to meet Passive House certification standards, with completion expected in 2026.
Vancouver mayor Ken Sim said: “This project embodies our city's spirit of diversity and resilience, offering a range of affordable and attainable housing options that cater to the needs of our residents. By investing in projects like Sunrise Village, we are ensuring that Vancouver remains a vibrant, inclusive, and accessible city for all.”
The funding for this project is sourced from various contributors.
The federal government has allocated C$10.95m ($7.98m) through the Affordable Housing Fund. The Province of BC has committed C$15.9m through BC Housing.
Brightside Community Housing has contributed C$23m in land equity. Financial support also includes a C$5.5m Community Housing Incentive Programme grant from the City of Vancouver and a Development Cost Levy exemption valued at over C$3m.
