VolkerFitzpatrick has been selected to design and construct the new Sturry Link Road project in Canterbury, Kent, UK.

Appointed by Kent County Council, the £34m ($42.91m) project has been financed through the UK government's Local Growth Fund.

It is intended to divert traffic from a busy level crossing and support the development of more than 16,000 homes in the region.

VolkerFitzpatrick Infrastructure divisional director Deon Scholtz said: “We are delighted to have been appointed by Kent Council Council to deliver the new Sturry Link Road. This project underscores our unwavering dedication to alleviating congestion and enhancing local infrastructure for the benefit of local communities.

“Our meticulous planning and steadfast commitment are laying the foundation for a more vibrant and connected future between Canterbury and Sturry.”

The construction company will develop a 550m-long road, featuring a 250m viaduct over the Great Stour river, its flood plain, and the Canterbury to Ramsgate railway line.

The viaduct's design includes a five-span structure, with the longest span reaching 56m.

In addition, the project encompasses the construction of a new bridge with a dedicated bus lane and a multiuser footway.

VolkerFitzpatrick will also create a new roundabout and approach roads for bridge connectivity.

The company is collaborating with Kent County Council to ensure the A28 road remains operational throughout most of the construction period.

To minimise disruption, the new roundabout is being constructed offline and will be installed towards the project's completion.

Construction is anticipated to begin next year, with completion targeted for late 2026.

The company will also provide employment and apprenticeship opportunities, working with local supply chain contractors and educational institutions such as the King's School.

Collaborative efforts also extend to various VolkerWessels UK business units, including VolkerGround Engineering and VolkerHighways.

In April last year, VolkerFitzpatrick broke ground on the runway expansion project at Southampton Airport in the country.
