The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has chosen Stantec to spearhead the preliminary and final design for key elements of the Newark AirTrain replacement project in the US.
The programme is valued at $2bn.
This development marks a step in enhancing the adoption of public transportation to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and strengthening connectivity within Newark and Elizabeth.
The AirTrain system allows seamless movement for customers and employees between terminals, parking areas, and car rental facilities, currently serving an average of 33,000 passengers daily.
The project is set to replace the existing AirTrain, which is said to be at the end of its operational lifespan, with a new system that can cater to the growing number of passengers using the service.
Stantec will lead the design of a new Maintenance and Control Facility, as well as create pedestrian connectors between the new AirTrain and Terminals B and C.
It will also oversee the decommissioning of the current AirTrain system.
The company’s scope of work further includes structural and building design, architecture, utilities, roadways, and ensuring the maintenance and protection of traffic during the project's execution.
Stantec vice-president and civic sector leader Ken Anderson said: “Our transit design solutions will balance an efficient and welcoming rider experience with sustainable, durable facilities that are adaptable to EWR’s evolving needs.
“We understand the need to provide safe, scalable, and inclusive services to make transit more accessible to all users as they navigate this busy system.”
This announcement follows Stantec's selection for the second phase of the Pure Water programme in San Diego, US, last month.
