Architectural and engineering consultancy SSH has been awarded a number of projects in Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD).

Awarded by the KAFD Development & Management Company (KAFD DMC), the developments include hotels, residences and entertainment facilities.

As the lead design consultant, SSH’s scope of work covers all engineering, multidisciplinary design and subconsultancy disciplines at KAFD.

KAFD DMC CEO Gautam Sashittal said: “From the outset, our vision at KAFD DMC has been to develop and operate the hub as a 24/7 living district where tenants, residents, employees and visitors can work, live and play. We expect the district workforce and inhabitants to reach 100,000 by the end of 2024.

“As a result, we expanded our mixed-use offering and are excited about working with SSH to deliver better infrastructure with increased parking spaces and more hospitality, retail and entertainment venues for our customers.”

Located in the country's capital of Riyadh, 22km from King Khalid International Airport, KAFD spans 1.6 million square metres and contains modern office accommodation, luxury residences, redefined urban living space, and work and leisure space.

Managed by KAFD DMC, it is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified, mixed-use financial district that ensures easy internal connectivity with its ten-minute travel strategy using electric scooters and ridesharing.

It has also constructed more than 40 climate-controlled sky bridges, which are set to enhance connectivity further with a monorail service connecting the entire district.

SSH CEO Matt Squires said: “Developments like KAFD excite us as they allow us to work with our clients and contribute our expertise and passion for design and engineering to influence this vibrant, global business and leisure hub positively.

“We are confident KAFD will be one of the world's most prominent business and lifestyle districts, and we look forward to supporting both KAFD's and Saudi Arabia's 2030 vision to bolster economic growth through infrastructure development, real estate and housing, tourism and hospitality.”

Investment in the infrastructure and energy & utilities sectors remains a major driver of overall construction growth

Infrastructure and Energy & Utilities sectors expanded in 2020 despite COVID-19 disruptions, which reflected the efforts by governments and public institutions to accelerate investment to stimulate activity. The recovery from the pandemic and the easing of restrictions allowed the resumption of work on major projects in 2021, and growth is set to remain strong in the coming years, particularly given major investment programs in the US and China.
