Construction company SRV Group has received a contract from Metsä Wood to build a Kerto laminated veneer lumber (LVL) mill in Äänekoski, Finland.

With SRV’s €86m contract, the work will be executed as a cooperative project management contract.

The new 50,000m² LVL mill will be established on the expanding Äänekoski industrial site as a component of the existing integrated mill.

The Kerto LVL mill will manufacture products for the construction industry.

The company will begin construction preparations immediately.

It aims to complete the construction of the large-scale industrial facility by mid-2025. Production is anticipated to commence in the latter part of 2026.

To meet energy efficiency and address various future requirements, the building’s design and construction will follow a lifecycle-wise approach.

SRV regional units senior vice-president Hannu Lokka said: “The Äänekoski Kerto LVL mill will be carried out using a modern cooperative model, which is clearly becoming more common in industrial projects due to its advantages.

“During the development phase, we planned and coordinated the project in good and close cooperation with the client, and are now ready to launch the implementation phase.

“We’ve already used this contract model successfully to implement facilities such as the Woodspin fibre mill and a multipurpose hall for RMC, and we’re currently constructing a factory building in Vantaa for the silicon wafer manufacturer Okmetic.”

The metaverse is still in its early stages - first movers have the chance to become market leaders in the construction industry

The construction industry has large and complex sites to manage, strict project deadlines, hazardous working conditions, and tight profit margins. It is also under increasing pressure to improve its ESG credentials and digitalize. The three primary use cases for the metaverse in the construction industry are training, building information modeling (BIM) renders, and collaborative creation, though its adoption is still in its infancy.
