Construction work on the second stage of the Spalding Urban Renewal Project in Geraldton, Western Australia (WA), has been officially completed.  

WA Premier Roger Cook and Housing Minister John Carey along with Geraldton Labor member Lara Dalton and City of Greater Geraldton representatives celebrated the completion of works.  

The project, which is being carried out with an investment of A$9.3m ($6.14m), is being executed in three stages with the aim of enhancing the suburb's amenities.  

It has involved the demolition of 12 outdated social housing properties, paving the way for new road connections and improved suburb accessibility. 

Out of the 48 social homes in the area, 26 have received major refurbishments, extending their lifespan.  

Currently, 14 additional units are being renovated, with three of them reportedly close to practical completion.  

The second stage, worth A$4.9m, included the expansion of roads and footpaths, additional renovations to social housing, and enhancements to AMC Park. 

It also saw the Mitchell Street Community Centre building upgraded and public open spaces enhanced. 

The improvements to AMC Park include a new waterplay feature, barbecues, flying fox, yarning circle, multiuse court, bush tucker garden, covered picnic tables, and public toilets.  

Dalton said: “These completed works will contribute to the long-term aim to revitalise the suburb and meet the community's vision for Spalding to be a welcoming and vibrant place to live and visit.” 

Cook added: “My government is continuing to deliver for regional Western Australia through our record A$2.6bn investment in housing and homelessness measures, including through this A$9.3m investment in the Spalding Urban Renewal Project in Geraldton.”
