Southampton City Council has granted approval for a build-to-rent (BtR) housing development at Britannia Road near St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, England, UK.

This permission was secured by the planning team at Savills central south for a £112m ($142.42m) scheme proposal put forward by Hawkstone Properties and SGN Place.

The 384-unit scheme is set to revitalise a former gasworks site that has been dormant for a decade.

It will feature 186 one-bedroom and 198 two-bedroom flats, with 176 on-site car parking spaces provided, and 264 of the flats to feature private balconies.

The site's residential blocks will range from eight to 17 storeys.

There will be commercial units on the ground floor, comprising a café and a convenience store, among other amenities.

The development will offer a range of ancillary facilities such as co-working spaces, meeting rooms, rooftop gardens, bicycle workshops, and even dog-washing spaces.

In addition, the scheme will provide public open space at the rear of the site.

The design of the scheme incorporates elements of the old gas holders within the landscaping, paying homage to the area's heritage.

Savills Southampton Central South planning team director Bryony Stala said: “These much-needed homes for the long-term rental market will offer stability and security for tenants.

“The scheme also delivers wider social value, providing a catalyst for development in the area to enable the creation of a community, which will in turn help support the commercial aspects of the scheme.”
