Skanska has been contracted for the construction of the Lokomotion Technology Centre’s first phase in Tampere, Finland.

The contract, awarded by Metso and valued at €99m ($107.57m), will be recorded in Skanska's Nordic order bookings for the second quarter (Q2) of 2024.

The Lokomotion Technology Centre site, which spans 23ha, was acquired by Metso in 2021. It is set to become a hub for more than 900 of the company's employees based in Tampere.

The initial phase of the centre will cover an area of approximately 34,000m² out of the total planned 66,000m².

The first phase includes the construction of the AGG Lokotrack factory and affiliated warehouses.

Skanska's role will encompass the development of infrastructure and new buildings at the site.

Specifically, the Lokotrack factory will design, test, and produce technologies, equipment, and components for aggregates and sand production.

It is targeting the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method environmental classification.

Metso has planned to transition all its Lokomo activities to the new centre in a phased manner.

Metso Aggregates business area president Markku Simula said: “We are very pleased to be able to implement the Lokomotion project, which is a significant project for Metso and will allow us to continue our operations in the area in a new state-of-the-art technology centre and production facility.

“The project involves a number of partners and will have a significant employment impact in the area.”

Construction is scheduled to commence in Q3 2024, with completion expected by Q3 2027.

Last month, Skanska completed a utility infrastructure extension for the future Otay Mesa East Port of Entry, preparing the site for construction.
