Construction has commenced of the first building of the new Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Joseph A. Remai Saskatoon Campus at Innovation Place in Canada.

The project, spearheaded by the Ministry of SaskBuilds and Procurement and Saskatchewan Polytechnic, is a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Advanced Education, Innovation Saskatchewan, and the University of Saskatchewan.

The initial phase of the new Skilled Trades and Technology building will involve site preparation tasks such as upgrading or removing underground infrastructure, relocating trees, and grading the land.

Late August 2024 will see the arrival of earthmoving equipment and the erection of construction fencing.

The development of the new campus aims to consolidate the current dispersed and outdated facilities into a revitalised learning environment.

This is expected to enhance opportunities for applied research and investment.

Design and pre-procurement processes are still ongoing, and a capital procurement is projected for early 2025, with the potential for construction to commence in 2026.

SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Terry Jenson said: Today, we are beginning earth works and upgrading utilities for this project to ensure our post-secondary students in Saskatchewan have the bright future they deserve.

“Thanks to a strong and growing economy our government is delivering modern, innovative infrastructure that meets the needs of our thriving province now and into the future.”

The 2024-25 Provincial Budget has allocated $6m for the planning and design stages of the new campus.

This is in addition to the $16m provided by the province since the 2022-23 fiscal year.

In a funding announcement made in September 2023, the Government of Saskatchewan pledged up to $200m towards the development of the new campus.
