Special Aerospace Services (SAS) has celebrated the start of construction on its new multiuse manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama, US.
Known as the SAS Campus, the facility is situated at Cummings Research Park. It will encompass more than 40,000ft², with 30,000ft² allocated for flexible manufacturing space.
It is being designed to serve various customer requirements, ranging from kitting and staging components to constructing dedicated systems and subsystems for projects.
Featuring modular manufacturing space and the ability to conduct top-secret work within its four high bays, the new facility is expected to offer versatility for SAS and its clients.
SAS CEO Heather Bulk said: "This new facility has been a long time coming, and we are really excited to begin building it to help our clients solve some of the toughest problems in the space and defence industries.
“Our presence in Huntsville, particularly in Cummings Research Park, positions us perfectly to leverage the proximity to key talent and industry partners.”
Construction of the SAS Campus is expected to be completed in approximately 14 months.
Once operational, it is anticipated to generate up to 60 new jobs across the region.
Fuqua & Partners Architects has taken on the design responsibilities for the SAS Campus while Brasfield & Gorrie is the construction company tasked with building the facility.
Freedom Real Estate & Capital is managing the overall project.
In April this year, Godspeed Capital Management revealed a partnership with SAS to create a platform for high-end space engineering, defence, and communications technology solutions serving US needs.
