Conversion works have commenced on the Redcar Central railway station, a Grade II listed Victorian building in England, UK.
The reformed building will serve as a leisure and retail hub, as well as a transportation link.
It will offer ticket machines, travel information, and covered waiting areas, alongside food and drink outlets available throughout the day and evening.
Robertson Construction North East has been appointed as the principal contractor for the scheme.
The project also includes the participation of conservation architect Howarth Litchfield, project and cost manager Identity Consult, and rail specialist Vextrix.
Litchfield architect and director Neil Turner said: “We were delighted to win the commission for the conversion of this beautiful building which had fallen into disrepair.
“The innovative conversion will bring life and vitality back to the building and contribute to the [local] council’s wider strategy of improvement in the town centre.’’
Set to be completed by 2025, the project will focus on sustainability.
It will use only electricity and will incorporate renewable energy systems. Solar panels, designed to be out of sight, will be installed to align with the station's traditional materials and aesthetic.
Throughout the construction phase, access to the railway platforms will be maintained.
Additionally, signage will be placed to guide passengers to and from the trains.

The project is being funded via the UK government’s Levelling Up Partnership Fund, the Welcome to Redcar and Cleveland fund administered via Tees Valley Combined Authority, and the Railway Heritage Trust.
In March this year, Robertson Construction Yorkshire & East Midlands initiated construction works on the Extra Care development in Cleckheaton, Kirklees, for Housing 21.
