PORR has been contracted by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) to upgrade a section of the S16 expressway in Poland.

This new contract marks the second construction lot of the S16 expressway entrusted to PORR.

The company is also nearing completion of the 16km section between Borki Wielkie and Mrągowo, which includes the Mrągowo bypass and is 95% finished.

The first construction lot is anticipated to be completed in the third quarter (Q3) of this year.

Valued at approximately €86m ($92.84m), the latest design-build contract involves converting an existing 18.2km-long stretch of the DK16 from Barczewo to Biskupiec into an expressway.

The expressway section will follow the current DK16 route, with PORR tasked with adding a second carriageway and reconstructing various segments.

In addition, PORR is responsible for constructing additional access roads for local areas, as well as rebuilding junctions in Kromerowo and Biskupiec.

It will also erect a technical building for expressway maintenance near the Biskupiec junction and a service area near Nowe Marcinkowo.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “Once completed, the S16 will serve as a regional artery for business and tourism. It will connect the regions of Suwałki, Augustów, Ełk, Mrągowo, Olsztyn, Iława and Ostróda. It will also be the shortest route between Berlin and the Baltic states, making it a key link within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).”

As part of the demolition of the existing DK16, PORR will recycle the old asphalt for use in the new road surface.

Plans also include an eco-friendly intersection lighting system.

The construction period is set for 39 months from the contract signing, with the road expected to open to traffic by mid-2028.

Last year, PORR secured a contract for the deconstruction and reconstruction of parts of the BMW Group facility in Munich, Germany.
