The Perth Film Studios project in Malaga, Western Australia (WA), has reached a construction milestone with the installation of steel roofing structures.
Spanning 40m and weighing 30 tonnes, two prefabricated modules will form the roof's framework over the first of four soundstages at the studio complex.
The complex, situated on a 16ha site near the new Malaga Metronet station, is set to offer 8,200m² of interior production space.
In addition, the studios will feature an art department, wardrobe facilities, set storage, parking, and a 23,200m² backlot.
This development is being backed by a A$233.5m ($157.44m) investment from WA's government.
The project aligns with the state government's Market-led Proposals Policy, which fosters partnerships that leverage private and public sector expertise and creativity.
WA Treasurer Rita Saffioti said: “It's really exciting to see the Perth Film Studios taking shape, with our long-time goal for a world-class screen production facility here in WA becoming a reality.
“The studio complex will rival the best in Australia and help attract major productions from around Australia and the world, while boosting the business and employment opportunities for the local industry and the WA economy more broadly. Backing Western Australia's film and television industry is a critical part of our plan to diversify WA's economy and set our state up for the long term.”
Currently, more than 200 people are employed at the construction site, with apprentices, trainees, and a number of indigenous employees making up 20% of the workforce.
The project has generated 600 direct and indirect jobs, including local suppliers for structural steel, concrete, and other materials and services.
Once operational, the studios are expected to support new film productions in the state.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with the studios set to open in early 2026.
The Arts and Culture Trust will own the Perth Film Studios on behalf of the WA state government.
Earlier this month, the government announced a A$69.2m contract for constructing a new northern breakwater at Bunbury’s Casuarina Boat Harbour.
