Nordic community builder Peab has secured a traditional contract to upgrade a train station and construct a pedestrian tunnel in Svedala, Sweden.

The Swedish Transport Administration commissioned Peab for this contract, which is valued at Skr106m.

Peab region manager Göran Wiking said: “This upgrade will make train travel more accessible for residents of Svedala and we’re pleased we can contribute to that.”

The company will be responsible for replacing the existing middle platform at the station with two longer side platforms.

These new platforms will allow longer trains to stop at the station while the added pedestrian tunnel will pass beneath the rails. The project also includes new lifts, plantings, and an expansion of the bicycle storage space.

Currently, travellers access the middle platform via a walkway over the rails.

The new platforms will provide travellers access from both the north and south sides of the station.

Construction will start on the north side at Stationsplan this month, with completion anticipated in March 2025.

The company will register this project in the fourth quarter of 2023.

This order comes shortly after Peab secured another traditional contract to rebuild the docks in Vaxholm, Sweden, last week.

Investment in the infrastructure and energy & utilities sectors remains a major driver of overall construction growth

Infrastructure and Energy & Utilities sectors expanded in 2020 despite COVID-19 disruptions, which reflected the efforts by governments and public institutions to accelerate investment to stimulate activity. The recovery from the pandemic and the easing of restrictions allowed the resumption of work on major projects in 2021, and growth is set to remain strong in the coming years, particularly given major investment programs in the US and China.
