Peab has secured a Skr299m ($28.46m) contract to renovate Stockholm's North Danvik Bridge for Storstockholms Lokaltrafik and the City of Stockholm's Transport Department in Sweden.

Built in the early 1920s, the bridge over Danvik Canal has an openable bascule design featuring a concrete counterweight.

It is said to have neared the end of its technical lifespan.

The renovation is expected to enhance safety and sustainability for both vehicular and mass transit across Stockholm and Mälardalen.

The bridge's appearance will be preserved during the renovation.

Peab product manager Ioannis Strantzalis said: “We’re very proud to have been commissioned to completely renovate this historic and unique bridge of great cultural and historical value.

“Peab has extensive experience in building and renovating openable bridges and we look forward to preserving the unique appearance of the North Danvik Bridge thereby ensuring a safe and sustainable traffic solution for the future.”

The project, now underway with demolition initiated, follows a traditional contract model.

Reconstruction is scheduled to commence post-mid-2024, continuing through late 2026, with the bridge expected to reopen by year-end 2026.

Order registration is anticipated in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024.

Peab has also begun work on a new jail in Borås, following a Skr499m turnkey contract with Specialfastigheter.

Situated near the Borås travel centre, the seven-storey facility will accommodate 116 prisoners and is set for completion by 2026.

Approximately 100 staff members are expected to operate within the new judicial centre, which will also house a new police station and district court upon completion.

Peab region manager Liselott Bergkvist said: “We're happy and proud that Specialfastigheter has once again put their trust in Peab. It means a lot to us to be able to provide our experience and expertise and thus contribute to Specialfastigheter and the Prison and Probation Service's crucial operations.

“This is a complex project that requires good coordination and collaboration between all the actors involved.”

The project was registered in Q2 2024.

Earlier this month, Peab secured a contract with the Swedish Fortifications Agency to construct a military dining facility at the P 18 regiment in Tofta, Gotland.
