Peab, a construction and civil engineering company, has received a contract for the expansion of the E20 road at Mariestad in Sweden, including the installation of a central barrier. 

Commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration, the turnkey contract is valued at Skr848m ($80.83m).  

Swedish Transport Administration project manager Marita Karlsson said: “We’ve been planning this project for years and the new road is eagerly awaited. It's great that we can now start building it together with Peab.” 

The development will see the transformation of a 20km section of the current motorway into a two-plus-two-lane road with a central barrier. 

The expansion will extend from the existing motorway section at Götene to the west of the Haggården interchange at Mariestad.  

The scope of the project also includes the construction of an overpass at the Lugnås interchange, 13 concrete bridges, and a tubular bridge.  

The current E20 road will be downsized and maintained as a local road. 

Upon completion, the road will be designated as a clearway with a speed limit of 100km/h.

Peab region manager Berth Larsson said: “We’re proud that the Swedish Transport Administration has once again put their trust in Peab and pleased to be involved in creating a safer and more passable road.  

“This is the fourth stage of the E20 expansion Peab is in charge of and with our specialist expertise in infrastructure projects we look forward to continued collaboration with everyone involved.” 

Commencement of the project is set for mid-2024, with handover expected by 2028.  

The project will be recorded in Peab's order books for the second quarter of this year. 

Earlier this month, Peab signed a contract to rebuild the existing town hall in Strängnäs, Sweden.
