Construction life-cycle assessment (LCA) software provider One Click LCA has announced a partnership with MEP 2040, which is a movement aimed at decarbonising building systems.

The collaboration focuses on reducing the carbon footprint of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.

The partnership between One Click LCA and MEP 2040 is set to provide the construction industry with tools and education to accelerate the decarbonisation of MEP systems.

Globally, emissions from buildings and infrastructure are claimed to be responsible for 57% of carbon emissions.

One Click LCA CEO Panu Pasanen said: “With the global building stock set to double by 2060, we need to develop a critical mass of MEP specialists now to rise to the challenge of decarbonisation.

“We’re proud to partner with MEP 2040 and help the industry take an important step towards a zero-carbon future with our tools.”

The new partnership will offer the MEP Carbon Tool, which will be free for six months to MEP 2040 signatories and supporters.

This tool is designed to help MEP designers easily identify and reduce embodied carbon in equipment and systems.

MEP systems' contribution to embodied carbon is said to range from 15% to 50% in new commercial buildings and can be as high as 50% in retrofits over a building's lifetime.

The partnership's objectives include supplying industry-tailored carbon tools, training professionals, creating LCA modelling methodologies, and more.

It also aims to promote the creation of MEP Environmental Product Declarations.

MEP 2040 Commitment founding member and co-chair Kayleigh Houde said: “MEP systems engineering embodies whole-life carbon between embodied, fugitive and operational emissions, however, we have been missing the critical piece of measuring the embodied carbon of our MEP systems at scale.”

Last week, One Click LCA entered a strategic partnership with auxalia for sustainable construction planning.
