New York governor Kathy Hochul has announced outlined plans for the upcoming phases of the Oakdale Commons redevelopment project in Johnson City, US.
The project entails the redevelopment of Oakdale Commons, formerly a distressed shopping centre in Johnson City, into a mixed-use destination.
The second and third phases of the project include the construction of a medical campus, covering 85,000ft², and a 22,000ft² childcare centre, which will provide up to 208 slots for children of various ages.
The childcare centre is expected to create up to 45 new jobs and will be administered by Broome County.
In addition, the project will see the construction of 125 residential units on an adjacent vacant parcel, supporting the job growth anticipated in the Greater Binghamton Area.
Hochul said: “The Oakdale Commons project is transforming a once-distressed mall into a vibrant, mixed-use community asset, which will provide much-needed affordable housing, childcare and ensure access to medical care.
“This innovative project further supports the transformation already underway in Johnson City and will serve as a glowing testament to what can be accomplished when the state and local stakeholders all pull together to get things done.”
The first phase of the redevelopment transformed the former Sears store into the Lourdes Pavilion, featuring health services and a fitness centre.
The phase also included the addition of a Beer Tree restaurant and brewery, along with a new aquatic swim centre, to the site's attractions, and Broome County has capitalised on the space for its offices.
Empire State Development is backing the project with up to $18m in support through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative.
With a total cost estimated at $200m, the project's construction is expected to be completed by early 2026.
