Construction work has officially started on North Ayrshire Council's latest housing development in Largs, a town in Scotland, UK.

It began following early preparatory works at the site.

The project, valued at £6m ($6.54m), has secured a £4m grant from the Scottish Government.

The government approved funding for the project through its Affordable Housing Supply programme, recognising the development's contribution to increasing local and national social housing supply.

Ashleigh (Scotland) is serving as the main construction contractor, with work anticipated to be completed in early 2025.

The development will be situated on the former St Mary’s Primary School site on Linn Avenue.

It will encompass 26 new homes, extending the adjacent 123-unit Flatt Road development completed in 2021.

The new homes, available for affordable rent from North Ayrshire Council, will feature a combination of two and three bedrooms.

Plans are also in place to engage community groups and local school pupils in the development of adjacent open spaces.

North Ayrshire Council Green Environment and Economy cabinet member and councillor Tony Gurney said: “We have one of the most ambitious housebuilding programmes in Scotland and the development at Largs will be yet another exciting addition to that programme.

“The 26 new homes on the site of the former St Mary’s Primary School will complete the regeneration of the former Largs school sites, creating a modern, cohesive and inclusive space for our residents.”
