UK-based rail operator Network Rail has commenced construction on a new footbridge over the Levenmouth railway in Duniface, Scotland. 

The footbridge, spanning 144m, will cross the new railway and the River Leven, forming a link between Methilhill and Kennoway in the country. 

The bridge is the first of three planned structures along the new six-mile branch line, designed to provide direct connections between the upcoming railway stations and the communities they aim to serve.  

The Duniface footbridge is a component of the first phase of the active travel network, which is currently focusing on establishing links to the new Leven and Cameron Bridge stations. 

The development of an improved walking and cycling network is said to be crucial to the future of the Levenmouth rail corridor.  

Network Rail Levenmouth Rail Link project manager Joe Mulvenna said: “We are delighted that the work is underway on the Duniface bridge, and we have a challenge ahead of us to get it ready in time for the railway opening in June.

“The bridge will improve options for walking and cycling but also support users of mobility scooters, wheelchairs, prams and buggies in moving about the community and accessing the rail network for onward journeys.” 

Local residents have been actively involved in providing feedback, which is noted to have helped in determining the precise locations of the bridges and refining the detailed designs.  

In January this year, Network Rail announced a series of upgrades to the Yorkshire Wolds railway line between Beverley and Hunmanby in England.
