NEI General Contracting has been appointed to oversee the construction of a housing project for older residents, 150 River Street Village, in Mattapan, US.
This initiative is a collaboration between Caribbean Integration Community Development (CICD) and the Archdiocese of Boston's Planning Office for Urban Affairs (POUA).
The project, designed by DMS Design, commenced with a formal ground-breaking ceremony in June this year, following the initial ground-breaking in March.
The Mattapan community collaborated with the developers and the archdiocese to ensure that the development met the demand for affordable housing, as well as offered long-term residence.
Planning Office for Urban Affairs president Bill Grogan said: “We're thrilled to partner with our longtime contractor, NEI, on a project that addresses the affordable housing crisis by providing housing for residents to safely and comfortably age in place, on a long-vacant site in Mattapan.”
Upon completion, the project will feature 30 one-bedroom units, catering to income levels ranging from 30% to 70% of the local median income.
It will have community space, including a public garden and easy access to public transportation.
The project's design incorporates amenities tailored to older adults such as an on-site indoor community room and laundry facilities.
NEI project executive Marisa Somers said: “We are pleased to kick off yet another project that will deliver much-needed housing stock to areas in need, and help older adults find a comfortable dwelling that allows them to remain in the Mattapan community.
“This has truly been a collaborative effort to work with CICD, the POUA, and the community at large to get this project off the ground, and we look forward to their continued partnership.”
Last year, NEI General Contracting completed the Maple on Franklin housing community in Holbrook.
Developed by NeighborWorks Housing Solutions, this project had a value of £18.5m ($24.26m).
