Nordic construction company NCC has been awarded a contract to construct a new district courthouse in Tönsberg, a city in southeast Norway.

Awarded by the Norwegian Directorate of Public Construction and Property, the contract is worth Nkr170m ($15.64m).

The company finalised a seven-week phase aimed at optimising and streamlining the project prior to the commencement of construction.

This planning phase was carried out in partnership with Dyrvik Arkitekter, the Norwegian Directorate of Public Construction and Property, and the Norwegian National Courts Administration.

NCC Norway Building head Roger Nygård said: “We interacted very well with all parties during the planning phase, which created a solid platform for an efficient production phase.

“NCC handed over Drammen district court this summer [mid-year], so we have an experienced and competent team that is now beginning work in Tönsberg.”

The new district courthouse, spanning 4,715m², will include 14 courtrooms, waiting areas, meeting facilities and office areas for 60 individuals.

It will be built as a passive house [a building that uses very little primary energy], hoping to meet high environmental standards.

All machinery used in the development will run on either electricity or biofuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Construction is set to commence in March 2024 and the courthouse will be ready for occupancy in late 2025.

The company will register the order value of the project in its NCC Building Nordics business area for the fourth quarter of 2023.

This deal comes after NCC secured a contract to build a multipurpose building in Oulu, Finland, on 4 October 2023.
