Transformation of national park in Western Australia begins

The project has been funded by various state-run initiatives alongside funding from an election pledge.

July 31 2023

Western Australia's (WA) state government has announced the start of construction to transform the John Forrest National Park in the Perth Hills.

John Forrest is claimed to be the first national park in the state.

This transformation is part of an A$17m ($11.30m) redevelopment project.

Construction on a new day-use area has already commenced, including accessible picnic and barbecue facilities, garden areas, as well as walkways that will eventually connect to a new café and function space.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year by local contractor Phase 3.

A 730m access road will be constructed by Proform Civil, with work beginning in the coming weeks.

The West Ridge car park will be the project’s second phase to be constructed.

Scenic Drive will be temporarily closed to visitors beginning in August, with entrance to the park via the main Park Road gate.

The current WA State Budget allocation of A$6.3m will be used in addition to A$8.4m from an election pledge, as well as A$2.5m from the WA Recovery Plan.

WA's Environment Minister Reece Whitby said: “It’s fantastic to see construction get underway on the first stage of this A$17m transformation of John Forrest National Park.

“The new picnic and day-use area will complement the surrounding landscape and allow visitors and families to enjoy nature at its best.

“John Forrest National Park is a hidden gem in the Perth Hills. This redevelopment will attract tourists to the area and ensure this natural asset continues to be a must-visit destination."
