Morgan Sindall Construction has secured a contract to build a new multimillion-pound Sustainable Transport Hub and Interchange in Harlow, UK.
The project is part of Harlow Council's initiative to revitalise the town centre and is supported by the government's Towns Deal, contributing to Harlow's £23.7m ($31.19m) Towns Fund programme.
The existing bus station will undergo a transformation, with plans to implement a one-way system for buses exiting onto Crown Gate.
The development aims to improve connections to the nearby railway station, the proposed Sustainable Transport Corridor of Harlow and Gilston Garden Town, local schools, and commercial areas.
Morgan Sindall's Essex division is collaborating with Harlow Council and the Procure Partnerships framework to meet the sustainable transport needs of the community.
Designed by McBains, the new hub will feature 16 bus stands under a 150m canopy, an indoor waiting area, and green space.
The hub will feature a separate cycle hub building and on-site bicycle storage.
Demolition work on the link bridge began in April and concluded in July this year, paving the way for the construction of a temporary bus station on Post Office Road.
This next phase will also entail the removal of existing waiting areas, and the creation of new bus routes, footpaths, and landscaping.
Morgan Sindall Construction Essex business operations director Dale Smith said: “Once complete, the Sustainable Transport Hub and Interchange will not only create a visually impressive focal point within the heart of the town, but it will enhance how residents and visitors move around Harlow - whether that’s by bus, car, bicycle or on foot.
“Rethinking the town’s space in this way will unlock a lot of social and economic benefits for the local community and Harlow’s businesses while paving the way for wider regeneration of the area.”
To minimise disruption during construction, Morgan Sindall will use its Intelligent Solutions approach, which includes establishing a temporary bus station to maintain the flow of local buses and traffic.
This follows Morgan Sindall’s recent commencement of construction on a Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station at Middlemore Lane in Walsall.
