Suffolk County Council has appointed the Eastern Counties business of Morgan Sindall Construction and building design consultants Concertus to build a new primary school and pre-school in Lakenheath, UK.

This new 1,500ft² project is procured under the Suffolk Construction and Building Services Framework.

The Lakenheath Primary and Pre-School is said to become the region’s first net-zero primary school.

Concertus associate director Darren Fellowes said: “We are pleased to be working closely with Suffolk County Council Children and Young People (CYP) team and existing school to design their first net-zero school.

“Having been involved since the inception stages, we have overcome many acoustic challenges due to its proximity to the RAF Lakenheath air base.”

Spanning across two storeys, the school will feature leisure and recreational facilities and hard and soft landscaped exterior play spaces.

On-site, the two-form entry primary school will also have a new 30-place nursery.

This project will use the in-house carbon reduction tool CarboniCa of Morgan Sindall to manage and minimise the carbon output.

Morgan Sindall Construction Eastern Counties area director Alister Broadberry said: “Morgan Sindall understands the important role that educational facilities have in the formative years of young people’s lives, and the importance of providing them with first-class facilities that enable them to fulfil their potential.

“As a local business, we understand how much this development is required and the important role it will play for the growing population of Lakenheath.”

Investment in the infrastructure and energy & utilities sectors remains a major driver of overall construction growth

Infrastructure and Energy & Utilities sectors expanded in 2020 despite COVID-19 disruptions, which reflected the efforts by governments and public institutions to accelerate investment to stimulate activity. The recovery from the pandemic and the easing of restrictions allowed the resumption of work on major projects in 2021, and growth is set to remain strong in the coming years, particularly given major investment programs in the US and China.
