Singapore’s LTA awards $510m design-and-build contract to Gamuda

Works under the project are set to be complex due to the unfavourable mix of ground conditions at the site.

December 07 2023

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a design-and-build contract to Gamuda Berhad Singapore's branch for the West Coast Station and tunnels.

This project comes under the Cross Island Line Phase II (CRL2) project.

The contract carries a value of approximately $510m.

CRL West Coast Station is an underground mass rapid transit (MRT) station located on West Coast Road.

As the station is close to existing facilities, including residential and commercial buildings, adequate traffic and utility diversion works will be carried out in stages to minimise the impact on residents and other stakeholders.

Construction works are expected to be complex given the ground conditions at this location, which has an unfavourable mix of soft coastal clay and hard sedimentary rocks.

Ahead of the excavation and construction of the station's structures, earth-retaining and stabilising structures will be built to ensure safety and ground stability.

Construction on CRL West Coast Station is set to begin in the first quarter of next year, with passenger service for CRL2 projected to begin in 2032.

CRL is the eighth MRT line in Singapore. It will connect vital centres such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District, and Changi to existing and future projects in the eastern, north-eastern, and western corridors of the country.

The entirely underground CRL will be built in three stages. CRL Phase I was announced in 2019 and includes 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill.

Phase I construction work has begun and is projected to be completed by 2030.

CRL Phase II was announced in September 2022 and will include six underground stations - at Clementi, Jurong Lake District, King Albert Park, Maju, Turf City, and West Coast.

Engineering evaluations for CRL Phase III are now underway, with further information to be released once the studies are finished.

Gamuda Berhad has experience in building infrastructure in Singapore and overseas. It has been enlisted for designing and constructing the CRL Defu station and tunnels, as well as the Gali Batu Bus Depot.

In October this year, the LTA awarded design-and-build civil contracts for two interchange stations under the CRL2 project.
