India-based infrastructure company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) subsidiary L&T Energy Hydrocarbon has received a significant contract from Perdaman Chemicals & Fertilisers for the construction of a 2.3-million-tonne (mt) urea plant in Australia.

Upon completion, the facility on Burrup Peninsula is set to be the largest urea factory in Australia and one of the largest in the world.

The scope of the project consists of approximately 50,000mt of modules expected to be delivered in 32 months.

L&T’s Kattupalli modular fabrication facility will manufacture these modules before they are sent to the project site in Australia to be thoroughly tested, pre-commissioned, and equipped for installation.

Perdaman chair Vikas Rambal said: “The state-of-the-art facility will help to ensure that Australia has a secure and reliable source of high-quality urea and therefore food security.

“Larsen and Toubro have gone through SCJV’s [Saipem and Clough joint venture] meticulous tender process and have been awarded a significant package of modular fabrication based on their technical expertise, quality, health, safety and environment (HSE) and operational excellence.”

Furthermore, L&T Heavy Engineering obtained additional orders for this project's entire package of Urea equipment.

This project includes roughly 1,160mt of equipment that will be delivered gradually over the course of 25 months.

The contract was provided by the Saipem and Clough joint venture, which serves as Perdaman’s engineering, procurement, and construction contractor.

L&T Energy senior executive vice-president and Whole Time director Subramanian Sarma said: “This project award is yet another testament to our capabilities, reinforcing our position among the leading module fabricators globally.”
