Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Power Transmission & Distribution business’ Renewable engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) arm has been selected as the turnkey EPC contractor to construct a solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Dubai, UAE.

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company - Masdar has entered into a power purchase agreement with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) for the development of this project.

DEWA will maintain a 60% ownership in the project and will be the exclusive purchaser of the electricity produced.

L&T Utilities whole-time director and senior executive vice-president T Madhava Das said: “We thank Masdar and DEWA, who are our longstanding customers, for their support in this project.

“We are committed to bringing in our innovative renewable energy solutions and project management expertise to speed up energy transition in the region which is pursuing economic development combined with sustainable practices.”

The project is part of the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

The solar park is said to be the world's largest single-site solar park based on the independent power producer (IPP) model.

With a target capacity of 5,000MW by 2030, the solar park is anticipated to save more than 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually upon completion.

The park is part of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and supports DEWA's aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Spanning 20km², the 1,800MW AC solar plant will be made operational across three phases.

The project scope includes evacuation and interconnection systems such as two gas-insulated substations, high-voltage underground cabling, and medium-voltage distribution networks.

The award comes after L&T's construction division received a contract to construct an All India Institute of Medical Sciences facility in Haryana, India, earlier this month.
